The good news is: Google hates most of your competitors, too. Google is tired of reading blogs about local businesses that no humans read. Google is tired of giving away free business to people who aren't even making an effort. Google knows the value of its chokehold on essentially every business on earth, even if some of them still don't. It doesn't mind giving away priceless spots for free. Yes, if you are a 7-11 or a grocery store, this does not apply that much. But if your clients don't visit you in person on a regular basis, then chances are that search injects itself between you and your potential clients nearly every time, and if you're ranking poorly, you don't just miss out on huge amounts of new business, you lose existing business this way regularly. Even if you turned down every New customer we brought you, improving your SEO would still pay for itself in most cases.

Thirty-thousand people in your industry have roughly similar keywords. How does Google decide who to hand all the business to?

As you may already be aware, Google's rollout of the Danish Butter Cookie update essentially means that Google no longer gives a shit what you do anymore, and your potential clients mostly don't either.

SEO spending, and really any kind of successful marketing, should cost you nothing. We encourage you not to look at it as simply a necessary expense to stay competitive, but as a scalable, consistently high-yield form of advertising. It really should be the easiest thing to sell. It is not.
