But if your clients don't visit you in person on a regular basis, then chances are that search injects itself between you and your potential clients nearly every time, and if you're ranking poorly, you don't just miss out on huge amounts of new business, you lose existing business this way regularly. Even if you turned down every New customer we brought you, improving your SEO would still pay for itself in most cases.

Thirty-thousand people in your industry have roughly similar keywords. How does Google decide who to hand all the business to?

If you already know even part of the answer, then you know that jumping ahead in the rankings is complicated but obtainable. There's not much difference between you and your competitors in Google's eyes. Very small things can move the needle tremendously. And there are an endless amount of these small things.
In most cases, there are also probably some big things.
